Why messy play matters more than you think

Paint on the sleeves and mud on the knees are signs of a great day. Here is what children learn when things get messy.

Children splashing in water play

Messy play looks like chaos to grown-ups, but for young children it is serious work.

What children learn

  • Fine motor skills from pouring, squeezing and scooping

  • New words to describe how things feel

  • Early science: what floats, sinks, melts or mixes

Try it at home

A tray of water, a few cups and some bath toys is a perfect start. Add a little bubble bath or ice cubes to keep it fresh.

About the washing

We use aprons and washable paints, but please send your child in clothes that can get messy. It is all part of the fun.
